TIMES JAKARTA, JAKARTA – Nestled along the southern coast of Yogyakarta in Gunungkidul, Nglambor Beach offers a unique blend of serene landscapes and vibrant marine life. Unlike many beaches facing the Indian Ocean, Nglambor's calm waters make it an ideal spot for snorkeling enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

What sets Nglambor Beach apart is the presence of two massive coral formations, Watu Kalong and Watu Kuntul, resembling giant turtles. These natural structures act as wave breakers, calming the otherwise strong currents of the Indian Ocean.

This unique feature creates a safe environment for snorkeling, allowing visitors to explore the underwater beauty without the typical risks associated with southern coastal waters.

Snorkeling Adventures Await

Snorkeling at Nglambor Beach is both accessible and affordable. For approximately IDR 50,000 per person, visitors can rent a complete snorkeling package, which includes a mask, snorkel, life jacket, rubber shoes, and guidance from experienced local instructors.

Many packages also offer underwater photography services, ensuring memories are captured beneath the waves.

Hari, a local snorkeling equipment provider, emphasizes the value of these packages. “Nglambor Beach is great for snorkeling. Equipment rental costs IDR 50,000 per person, and that already includes a snorkel, mask, and safety jacket,” he saidon Monday (2/6/2025).

Beyond Snorkeling: Activities and Amenities

While snorkeling is the main attraction, Nglambor Beach offers more.

  • Beach Relaxation: The soft white sands and clear waters provide a perfect setting for sunbathing and leisurely walks.
  • Trekking: Surrounding hills offer trails for those interested in light hiking, leading to panoramic views of the coastline.
  • Suspension Bridge: Adventurous visitors can cross a suspension bridge connecting to nearby coral islands, adding a thrill to their beach experience.

Facilities at the beach include food stalls serving fresh seafood, clean restrooms, prayer rooms, and ample parking space. The local community manages these amenities, ensuring a welcoming environment for all visitors.

Planning Your Visit

  • Location: Nglambor Beach is situated in Purwodadi Hamlet, Tepus Village, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta.
  • Access: Approximately a 2-3 hour drive from Yogyakarta city. Due to limited public transportation, it's advisable to use private vehicles. Local motorcycle taxis (ojek) are available from the parking area to the beach.
  • Entrance Fee: IDR 6,000 per person. Additional costs include parking fees and optional activities like snorkeling or crossing the suspension bridge.
  • Best Time to Visit: Dry season months (April to October) offer the clearest waters and most favorable snorkeling conditions. Morning visits are recommended for optimal visibility and calmer seas.

Conservation and Respect

Visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment:

  • Avoid Touching Coral: Coral reefs are delicate ecosystems; refrain from touching or stepping on them.
  • Follow Guidelines: Adhere to instructions provided by guides to ensure safety and environmental preservation.
  • Leave No Trace: Dispose of trash properly and maintain the cleanliness of the beach.

Nglambor Beach stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of tourism and nature. Its unique geological features, coupled with community-driven conservation efforts, make it a must-visit destination for those seeking both adventure and tranquility. (*)
