TIMES JAKARTA, SURABAYA – As many 20 students from Tokai University, Japan invited by Surabaya University (Universitas Surabaya or Ubaya) to study the techniques how to batik of cherry blossoms – leaves of keluwih motifs, Wednesday (27/02/2019).

This Batik Painting activity is one of a series of programs The Student Workshops on Global Business in 2019  held by Ubaya Bussiness and Economics Faculty.

"Collaboration with different cultures and countries isn’t easy. I hope this activity will be a place for growing of cultural intelligence, we must be aware of habits, culture, norms, and styles. So this event is not only based on profit oriented or expansion, but also requires mutual understanding that is in line with Ubaya's mission of multiculture and crossculture, "said Aluisius Hery Pratono S.E., M.D.M., Ph.D. as chairman of the organizer.

In this activity, they are asked to study how to batik of cherry blossoms - leaves of keluwih motifs. The selection of those motifs reflects the cultural exchange between Indonesia and Japan.

They join the workshop how to batik starting from the using of the tjanting needles to “draw” up to add the dye.

Firstly, the workshop gave the participants explanation the materials and equipments used in batik process, finally the workshop gives chance to each participant to batik by following the pattern of cherry blossoms - leaves of keluwih up to add the dye.

Meanwhile, Hiroshi Nakagawa, Ed.D. as one of the lecturers of Tokai University in Japan, said that this program is good for increasing the courage and confidence of Japanese students in getting to know new cultures and environments.

"In addition to learning culture, Japanese students can learn to be bolder and not be ashamed if they meet new people," Hiroshi said when met at Universitas Surabaya (Ubaya). (*)
